Our smiles can be a real pain in the behind. I'’ve always found it bizarre how many people are born with crooked, twisted, impacted, and lopsided teeth. What is going on here? Every other aspect of our bodies seems to fall nicely into place. At least for most people. What’’s up with the choppers? So many people end up needing braces. Now, I am certainly thankful that I wasn'’t one of them. However, both of my daughters require braces on their teeth. At least if they want them to look straight by the time they'’re in high school. So, what happens with all those individuals who aren'’t able to get braces as a child? Maybe they'’re parents simply can'’t afford it. I know; they acquire braces for adults! Hey, it’’s not uncommon these days.
There’’s no doubt you encounter braces for adults off and on. I see a lady daily at a local coffee shop that has braces. My guess is she’’s around 40 years old. Naturally this would be a bit more awkward getting braces at that age, but it’’s never too late to do so. If you'’re a 45 year old mom and never had the opportunity to acquire braces, but now you can afford them, go ahead and check into braces for adults. It’’s not just about the metal tracks and head-gear any more. Now you can enjoy a set of clear braces for adults. This will make the fact that you have braces much less obvious. People won'’t stop to stare at your metal grin. They probably won'’t even spot them. After about two years, those braces for adults will be off and you'’ll be smiling pretty.
Ever heard of Invisiline? This is all the rage now! Adults and teenagers alike are taking full advantage of these new-age braces. They basically resemble a clear, compact mouth guard that slides over the teeth. Once they'’re in, it’’s truly hard to spot them. Of course they come out when you eat or brush, but otherwise they stay on like braces. This is a pretty nifty idea considering that they'’re so subtle and convenient. What else can you ask for? If you'’re curious about Invisiline, you should consult your dentist. He/she can probably tell you if you'’re a likely candidate. You may have to acquire braces for adults, but no one said you couldn'’t do it in style.

My daughter’s grandparents recently asked me if they could take her in for a teeth cleaning. I figured she was about due for one, and that if they wanted to pay for it, there was no reason to say no. She came home quite happy about her visit with the dentist, and I was glad to hear she didn’t bite anyone and she didn’t freak out. Moments like those in the past have not be quite as peaceful. I think that might change if we ever have to do something more than a cleaning. Goodness knows the dentist is not a lot of fun, but when you hear drills and strange instruments, you know someone is going to be unhappy.
Most children have a problem going to the dentist, and that is mostly the fear of the unknown. There are books you can read with them about going to the dentist. Though these can help, the often aren’t enough. Nothing is going to beat actually going there and seeing that everything is okay. The best way to do that is to take them in for a teeth cleaning a few times. That way, if something else happens, they aren’t going to be quite as freaked out when they have to go for something else.
My daughter really doesn’t need frequent teeth cleanings at her age, but I do get her in once a year. She starts school soon, and I know they will help keep an eye on this. I remember when I was young that we had them done right in school, with our parents permission of course, though I’m not so sure that they do this any more. I don’t even know if all schools can afford to have a dental hygienist on the staff any longer. I know we had it, but as it turned out, I found out that many of my friends that I know now never had one.
One thing that people forget about when they get older is to go in for teeth cleaning on a regular basis. I know that I didn’t do it for a while, but then again, I never thought I needed one. That thinking was rather stupid. A good teeth cleaning is good for the teeth, and it makes you feel better, at least for a little while. Now that I have to think about this for my daughter, I guess it’s time that I go in and get it done for myself more often.

How can I “snack smart” to protect myself from tooth decay?
Before you start munching on a snack, ask yourself what’’s in the food you'’ve chosen. Is it loaded with sugar? If it is, think again. Another choice would be better for your teeth. And keep in mind that certain kinds of sweets can do more damage than others. Gooey or chewy sweets spend more time sticking to the surface of your teeth. Because sticky snacks stay in your mouth longer than foods that you quickly chew and swallow, they give your teeth a longer sugar bath.
You should also think about when and how often you eat snacks. Do you nibble on sugary snacks many times throughout the day, or do you usually just havedessert after dinner? Damaging acids form in your mouth every time you eat a sugary snack. The acids continue to affect your teeth for at least 20 minutes before they are neutralized and can'’t do any more harm. So, the more times you eat sugary snacks during the day, the more often you feed bacteria the fuel they need to cause tooth decay.
If you eat sweets, it’’s best to eat them as dessert after a main meal instead of several times a day between meals. Whenever you eat sweets — in any meal or snack — brush your teeth well with a fluoride toothpaste afterward.
When you'’re deciding about snacks, think about:
- the number of times a day you eat sugary snacks
- how long the sugary food stays in your mouth
- the texture of the sugary food (chewy? sticky?)
If you snack after school, before bedtime, or other times during the day, choose something without a lot of sugar or fat. There are lots of tasty, filling snacks that are less harmful to your teeth — and the rest of your body — than foods loaded with sugars and low in nutritional value. Snack smart!
Low-fat choices like raw vegetables, fresh fruits, or whole-grain crackers or bread are smart choices. Eating the right foods can help protect you from tooth decay and other diseases. Next time you reach for a snack, pick a food from the list inside or make up your own menu of non-sugary, low-fat snack foods from the basic food groups.

A mother in Bethelem PA, was charged with child endangerment in this very odd story.
The poor son of the mother had to have 12 rotten teeth pulled because of decay and neglect.
The defendant told authorites that she believed “his baby teeth were going to fall out on their own,”'’ and therefore she saw no reason to take care of them.
The boy testified that he had complained of pain in his mouth and headaches since summer 2005.
